Why We Built Glimr: Our Vision for Video Chat
The story behind Glimr and our mission to create a safer, more enjoyable random video chat experience.
Random video chat has been around for over a decade, but the experience has largely stagnated. We built Glimr because we believe it can be so much better.
The Problem With Existing Platforms
Most random video chat sites suffer from the same issues:
- Outdated, clunky interfaces
- Rampant inappropriate behavior
- No real safety features
- Poor video and audio quality
- Aggressive advertising
Users deserve better.
Our Approach
Glimr is built on a few core principles:
Safety First
We've implemented screenshot capture and reporting systems to discourage bad behavior. When users know there's accountability, they behave better.
Clean, Modern Design
No ads cluttering your screen. No confusing interfaces. Just you, your camera, and the person you're talking to.
Performance
WebRTC peer-to-peer connections mean your video and audio go directly to the other person, not through our servers. This means lower latency and better quality.
Anonymity With Accountability
You don't need an account to use Glimr, preserving the spontaneous nature of random chat. But fingerprinting and ban systems ensure bad actors can be removed.
What's Next
We're constantly improving Glimr based on user feedback. Planned features include:
- Interest-based matching
- Language preferences
- Enhanced moderation tools
- Mobile apps
