The catch is that the good filters, gender, country, language, sit behind a paid tier, and the free experience pushes you toward creating an account even where one is not strictly required.

Chatroulette

This one surprises people. Chatroulette still exists, and its current version lets you switch to text chat when you do not feel like talking on camera. Be aware the whole site has changed shape: it is 18+, moderated by a mix of AI and humans, and matching now runs through photos, where both sides agree before a chat starts. That is a long way from the anonymous roulette it invented in 2009, and whether that is an improvement depends entirely on what you came for.

What about Glimr?

Here is our honest entry. Glimr has a text panel, but it runs alongside a live video call rather than replacing it. There is no text-only mode. If you want conversation with the camera firmly off, we are not the right site tonight, and the three above will serve you better.
